CHAPTER 14

Days at Sam’s Club

Schuyler never thought about how long he’d worked at Sam’s Club until he arrived one Friday morning to find the store decorated for the Fourth of July. Wow. He hadn’t even noticed the ramped-up deliveries of barbecue supplies that should have been a clue. And, during early morning staff meetings, how had he failed to miss any mention of this important-for-business holiday?

The answer to his question wasn’t hard to find. As if he didn’t already know.

No-brainer.

At the early morning staff meetings, he hunkered down at the table farthest away from where the store executives sat. Thus positioned behind other associates, he was hidden from the view of the Human Resources director, Ms. Chatterjee. She’d never guess he spent the entire meeting staring at her, while remaining oblivious to whatever business was conducted.

Things had gotten out of hand. Even from his lopsided perspective, he realized that. This coming Monday, June 26th, he’d have been working on the dock at Sam’s Club for two whole months and the frequency of his treks up the stairs to the Human Resources department, after conjuring up some lame excuse, or a lamer question, was beyond embarrassing. Most often, Janice Garcia answered the question after she asked him what his business was and he, frustrated, hurried back down the stairs and returned to the dock.

Give up, Schuyler. You’re making an even bigger ass of yourself.

There were enough times, however, when Janice was not on duty and, on hearing the buzzer ring at the front desk, Chatterjee would emerge in all her glory to attend to the needy associate. Having figured out this repeated pattern, and more or less aware of when Janice was away from her desk, Schuyler timed his work breaks and treks up the steps to coincide with her absence. Then he was able to question Chatterjee about crucial or confusing points in the associates’ handbook, about necessary safety regulations on the dock, and what he might do to improve his employee performance pending his upcoming six-month review that was only four months away. It was vital he serve the Club to the best of his ability.

“I was just wondering, Ms. Chatterjee, whether the breaks I’m taking are too long?”

“That would be a matter for your supervisor, Mike, to decide, Mr. Schuyler.”

If Chatterjee suspected these frequent visits were ploys to spend a few minutes with her, and he often felt she saw right through him, she never let on. Each time, she folded her hands on the desk and focused her lovely smile and sparkling eyes upon him, as if his concerns affected the welfare of the entire worldwide corporation.

By this point, Schuyler felt like such a fool he didn’t care if she already knew he was a goner. Hopelessly in love with her. As far as he could recall, he’d never felt like this about any woman. Certainly not Natalie. Not even Janelle. This was the real thing. He was running out of excuses for trudging up to HR and, worse yet, he was a laughingstock for the guys on the dock.
